Churchill's offers daily specials and I have to recommend ordering them. While the standard menu is pub-like, the specials are creative, such as the herb-crusted Sea Bass served on a bed of baby Spinach with a red pepper sauce. It was scrumptous and plentiful at only $10.95. I've had the specials in the past and have never been disappointed. On Saturday, my husband opted for the marinated steak -- delicious taste, but he just didn't get a great piece of meat. Salads came with the meal -- nothing remarkable here, but the chilled plates were a nice touch. We shared the Snicker Bar Pie for dessert and kicked things off with two glasses of house Merlot. All in all, a nice meal.
Churchill's features a lot of wood, as you might expect in a pub-type place, but it's much more airy than a dark bar. There's glass partitions that separate the booths and TVs that dot the place in site lines so the casual or ardent sports person can stay abreast of the "game." In the nice weather, the entire front of the restaurant "opens up" so that you're adjacent to the sidewalk and a great breeze. In the fall and winter, Saturday afternoon's at Churchill's is laid back, but the place can get noisy later in the day and in the evening. It's in the heart of RVC, very convenient to shopping, the movies and the train.
Service is prompt -- not overly friendly. But if you ask for things, you get them, and quickly. It's fine if you're looking for efficient, no personality service, which is fine in my book. No one was trying to inject themselves in my lunch, as sometimes happens with overzealous waitpeople.
It depends on what you order whether Churchill's is a value or not. Desserts are $3.95 -- and that's a bargain. The fish I had was a bargain at $10.95. However, my husband's steak was overpriced at $20.00...so shop the menu and you'll be fine...
Overall, it's a great place for lunch and drinks. If you're out and about in Rockville Centre, this is a preppy, nice, fun local (not a chain restaurant joint) place to grab a bite to eat. Is it going to be the restaurant experience of your dreams? No, of course not...but were you expecting "21"? It's a great place -- for what it is -- which is a very nice, good-looking, friendly, clean upscale pub.
